How to Make Your Bouquet Last Longer: Expert Tips from a Mossel Bay Florist

Keeping your flowers fresh and vibrant doesn't have to be a mystery. Whether you're sending a surprise gift or treating yourself to a stunning bouquet from Joan’s Bloemiste, these expert tips will help you extend the life of your flowers. As a trusted Mossel Bay florist, we know exactly what it takes to make flowers last longer—especially in our coastal climate.

How to make your bouquet last longer

1. Start with a Clean Vase

Before placing your flowers, ensure your vase is squeaky clean. Leftover bacteria can shorten the life of your flowers dramatically. Rinse it thoroughly with soap and warm water.

2. Trim the Stems at an Angle

Use sharp scissors or a floral knife to trim each stem at a 45° angle. This helps with better water absorption and prevents stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase.

Did you receive a bouquet of roses? Trim them daily for the best results.

3. Use Flower Food (Or a Homemade Mix)

If your bouquet came with flower food, use it! If not, mix your own with a teaspoon of sugar, a splash of bleach or vinegar, and lukewarm water.

4. Change the Water Every 2 Days

Fresh water = fresh flowers. Every two days, change the water, clean the vase, and re-trim the stems. This stops bacteria from spoiling your bouquet too soon.

5. Keep Flowers Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight

South Africa’s warm weather is beautiful—but not ideal for fresh-cut flowers. Display your arrangement in a cool, shaded spot away from windows and heating appliances.

6. Remove Wilting Flowers

Remove any dying flowers or leaves immediately. This prevents decay from spreading to the rest of the bouquet and keeps your arrangement looking neat.
